Everyone reading this who has experienced cancer knows exactly where they were when their own personal journey began. When they heard those three words, "YOU HAVE CANCER."
For me, I was playing basketball with the kids and said, "I have to go to my dentist appointment to get my teeth cleaned. I'll be back in an hour." That was one year ago and I haven't been back. They found head and neck cancer that day. The following week I was on an operating table in a ten-hour operation and spent eleven days in the ICU. They removed my teeth, parts of my jaw, and then took the skin from my arm to make me a new tongue. I was lucky. The dental hygienist was very professional in her job, and it was she who discovered it.
For the next eleven days in the ICU, the nurses monitored me every hour to make sure my new tongue would survive. The nurses' dedication was simply incredible. Always smiling and in great spirits. They are the most incredible human beings on earth.
On an equally important note, my family doctor wanted me to go for a colonoscopy back when I was 49 years old. I didn't go. A few months later he really pressured me to just go and get it over with. So I relented and went. Turns out I had 23 polyps and 3 were cancerous. I asked the surgeon how long I would have lived had I not gone. He said maybe three years. God willing, I'll turn 73 in a few months. I don't know if you can read into anything I've just written above. But GO! Please go get SCREENED!
Before my journey began I was never in a hospital. Now I'm sitting in waiting rooms for MRIs, CT scans, ultrasounds, and many other procedures. The most striking thing I witnessed, then realized, was the ages of all the people sitting in there with me. We were all in a cancer building so everyone knew why they were there. They were all so young. In their 20s up to my age. It was shocking to me to see so many young people sitting there absolutely grief-stricken. I had to try and do something so future generations would be spared this grief.
There is only one way to rid the world of this disease and spare everyone from it: by supporting research scientists and doctors who have dedicated their lives to finding a cure. Once you read "It's About Us" on the home page, you will easily understand where we are heading with this program.
Growing up in the 1950s and 60s, most of us had our kids in the 70s and 80s, who in turn now have their own kids and our grandkids. That is the future. We are all ordinary people who are just trying to conquer cancer in the best way we know how for the next generations to come. A world free of this misery.
